چکیده
Sharon A. Clay Department of Plant Science, South Dakota State University, Brookings, SD 57007 Microarray analysis was used to identify changes in gene expression in corn leaves collected from plants at the V11–14 growth stage that resulted from competition with velvetleaf. The plants were grown in field plots under adequate N (addition of 220 kg N ha 1) and irrigation to minimize N and water stress. Consequently, only differences resulting from competition for micronutrients, light, and perhaps allelopathic stress were anticipated. Genes involved in carbon and nitrogen utilization, photosynthesis, growth and development, oxidative stress, signal transduction, responses to auxin and ethylene, and zinc transport were repressed in corn growing in competition with velvetleaf. Very few genes were induced because of competition with velvetleaf, and those that were provided little indication of the physiological response of corn. No differences were observed in genes responsive to water stress or sequestering/transporting micronutrients other than zinc, indicating that these stresses were not a major component of velvetleaf competition with corn at the developmental stage tested.

Effect of Cry3Bb Bt Corn and Tefluthrin on Postdispersal Weed Seed Predation
Indirect effects of insect control strategies on weed populations are important to consider when developing robust integrated pest management strategies. Weed seed predation rates were investigated in corn managed under three contrasting treatments based on control practices for corn rootworm: (1) the transgenic crop Cry3Bb Bt corn, (2) the broad-spectrum insecticide tefluthrin, and (3) no inse...
متن کاملGermination Patterns in Naturally Chilled and Nonchilled Seeds of Fierce Thornapple (Datura ferox) and Velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti)
Seeds from natural populations of fierce thornapple and velvetleaf collected in a corn-growing area in central Spain were incubated at a range of constant temperatures and water potentials to model the progress of germination on the basis of the accumulation of hydrothermal time. Previous to the germination tests, the seeds were treated in two different ways: (1) dark storage under dry conditio...

/ Abstract. Benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC) was extracted from mature papaya (Carica papaya L.) seeds and applied to imbibed velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medic. #3 ABUTH) seeds. Complete inhibition of germination occurred at a concentration of 6 x l(f4 M BITC, and only 28% (compared to controls) of the seeds germinated after 4 days exposure to the 4 x l(f4 M treatment. Corn (Zea mays L. 'DeKal...

Applied at 0.004 M, the second compound completely arrested germination of velvetleaf (Abulilolllheophrasli) and decreased the germination rate of s...
متن کاملNitrogen Fertilizer and Crop Residue Effects on Seed Mortality and Germination of Eight Annual Weed Species
Weed seed persistence in the soil seedbank is central to weed population dynamics; however, limited knowledge of mechanisms regulating seed survival in soil remains an obstacle to developing seed-bank management practices. Weed seeds are rich in carbon and nitrogen, and therefore may represent an important nutritional resource to soil microbes. The objective of this study was to test the hypoth...
